Analysing 5 Dance videos

Disclosure - When A Fire Starts To Burn

  • This video contains a lot of comic elements throughout the video. For example everyone in the church dancing and the preacher bursting into song. This is quite a common convention in dance music to add comedy. For example in my vodcast it shows a clip from Avicii-Levels which has a very comical edge as a worker bursts out into dance in his office.

  • Another element to this video is the diagetic start when the precher is giving a preach without music. This then makes the start of the song all the more entertaining as you don't expect the preacher to burst into song.

  • Iip synching is involved with this video, the artist isnt the one lip synching however it works very well as the character chosen looks like he would be the man singing it.

Breach - Jack

  • Again like in many house/dance this video involves humour. This time the video involves people dancing, then transition to the opposites of the people dancing, with the opposite  amount of hair on their body, so bald head and eyebrows.

  • The video compares opposites, so hair and not hairy. The mise en scene is also the same the background is all hairy. The mise en scene is very unique and this is what alot of dance videos nowadays try to acheive, to be unique.

  • Breach like many other artists decided to employ professional dancers for their video. This goes with the genre as it is the 'dance' genre therefore the song is made to dance to, this is a simple concept yet very effective.

Martin Garrix - Animals

  • Like in many other music videos slow motion is used, this time it is used to enhance the dance moves of the breakdancers. This makes clips look more professional and gives the audience a better view of the dance moves the dancer is performing.

  • because of the genre (House/Electro), this type of music is intended to be used in nightclubs. Therefore the video is set in a nightclub, this is i think intended to be done to almost give a message to Dj's to play his song.

  • This video has gone with Laura Mulvey's male gaze theory, They are objectified and used as a an object to attract the male audience. This makes the male gender want to watch the video.

Redlight - Get out my head

  • During most of this song, the transition go perfectly with the beat. This makes the video very and very upbeat. This makes the video more exciting and better viewing.

  • This video involves alot of culture. This gives it a positive vibe but also more of an urban feel. This gives the artist more of a street cred and a positive outlook.

  • black and white is also used to give a contrast, edited in to show the dark side of the video, it is black and white on a dark mood. For example the skeleton in this video.

Steve Aoki, Chris Lake & Tujamo - Boneless

  • In this music video titles are used cleverly, They are very cartoon like to look like each actor in it is almost a character in a film. It does this for each artist in the video then shot a shot of each of them.

  • This video is meant to be like a hollywood production. Not just with the characters like an old school film and the titles. But the intertextual reference with the famous Hollywood trees to enhance the hollywood feel.

  • i think this films preferred reading is to feel like an older hollywood film s each group in the video have names. E.h 'The Rampants' they then have a skate off instead of a shoot off or a dance off which would usually happen in a film.

E.G8 Friend Within - The renegade

Friend Within - The renegade

    RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN VISUALS + LYRICS:
Renegade - One who rejects a religion, cause, allegiance, or group for another; a deserter.
The renegade is a video in which a little boy in an african slump, carries a boom box round the slum with the the renegade song playing.

The relationship is between the location of the video and the title and lyrics. As a renegade is a deserter, someone who changes allegiance or group etc. It then proceeds through different people who join in with dancing to the renegade.

GENRE CHARACTERISTICS:
With dance/house music generally it involves some form of dancing as that is what dance music is made for, hense the name. It is made to be danced to in nightclubs, bars etc or in any situation you can dance.

Therefore dancing is used in most dance videos i have watched, from many of david guetta's songs to faithless insomnia. Dancing in dance videos is like lip synching in rap videos it is almost essential, and a common convention of dance videos. Dancing is used in most scenes by several different people.

The boom box
INTERTEXTUALITY?
There is a lot of things intertextual with other dance videos, one is the obvious one which i dancing. Another is the fact they are using a boom box this is used in a lot of past dance and hip hop videos. It is something that was used in the past, however this appears to be a less fortunate country that don't have the technology we do.

PERFORMANCE, NARRATIVE AND/OR CONCEPT?:
I would say the video is part performance part concept as there is lots of performing in the video, with several dancers. however the video is very unique and has no real meaning which gives it the concept feel.

STAR TREATMENT
Yet again in a dance video the artist/artists are no in the video. This is because the artist does not sing the video, therefore it wouldn't go with the usual music video convention.

Therefore the star treatment is usually passed over to one character, which in this video has passed over to the little boy on the bike who rides around sharing the song on his boom box.

SHOT VARIETY + NO. OF SETUPS:
Set up No.1, The first dance scene.

Set up No.2 the second dance scene

Set up No.3

Set up No.4

Set up No.5

E.G4 Guns N' Roses - Sweet Child O' Mine

Guns N' Roses - Sweet Child O' Mine

RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN VISUALS + LYRICS:
The whole video is talking about a girl, Saying 'she's got eyes of the bluest skies' it then cuts to shots of different girls.

Apart from this there is no relationship between the visuals and the lyrics as it is purely a performance video giving an insight into what it's like to be on stage with the band.

    GENRE CHARACTERISTICS:
with rock from the 80's nearly all of it was performance as editing software and special effects were nothing compared to the modern day videos, therefore the videos were nearly all of the bands performing.

INTERTEXTUALITY?
This video is intertextual with most bands in that era. From the beatles who first started this kind of band performance style to the Rolling Stones. They all have videos like this of them performing live, very rarely will you see a band from that era have a concept or narrative video.

PERFORMANCE, NARRATIVE AND/OR CONCEPT?:
this video is obviously as much of a performance video as you could get with almost the whole video of them performing!

PERFORMANCE STYLE:
the performance style of this video is as simple as it could possibly be, just them performing their song. The shots of the band vary and the editing is done very cleverly so it doesn't get boring. It is like a fans video as you get to almost be on the stage with the band.

STAR TREATMENT
The star treatment is spread across the band, as each band member is just as important as the other, however the two that are most involved (the singer and the guitarist, slash) have more involvement in the video as the lead guitarist has a lot of solos. Then the lead singer obviously singing the whole song.

LOCATION/S + MISE-EN-SCENE:
There is only one location which is with the band on stage!

There is the obvious mise en scene of a band with all the speakers and the big stand etc. With the props bands usually have. It is completely stereotypical of a band, to have a guitarist drummer and singer.

E.G5 Tyler The Creator - Yonkers

      Tyler The Creator - Yonkers

      Directed By Wolf Haley
      Filmed By Luis Panch Perez

        RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN VISUALS + LYRICS:
there is no real relationship between the lyrics and the visuals. The song is a very dark song that is then emphasized by the dark black and white lighting. Then again by the cockroach type bug on his hand, the way he st airs into it demonically.

      GENRE CHARACTERISTICS:

Tyler The Creator and his colleagues in OFGWKTA are very unique and have a very unique style, it is rap however, a very unique type of rap.

Never the less, like rap the artist is in the video through most of it, lip synching and other things. With rap, most artists who do a music video appear in it themselves, its like an un-written rule, as i find it hard to think of a rap video that doesn't.

Tyler the creators odd future brand

      PERFORMANCE, NARRATIVE AND/OR CONCEPT?:
This video is a concept video, it is probably the most unique video i have ever watched, there is nothing out there like it. Tyler the creator and his group have made a brand name for themself. This is from having a comic and different type of style.

      PERFORMANCE STYLE:
The performance style is as concept as you could get. It is completely random and strange. The artist eats a cockroach, starts being sick and then hangs himself at the end. There is very little performance involved just clever and individual shots. A demonic performance enhanced by the close ups of him with his eyes fully black.

      STAR TREATMENT
Again like rap songs, The artist is the soul focus, which again and again i see in each rap video i analyse. Again the artist lip synching throughout most of the song.

PACE + ANY VARIATION OF PACE:
the pace changes at the point when Tyler eats the bug. the beat then goes along with him being sick. The normal beat the carries on when he stops being sick

SHOT VARIETY + NO. OF SETUPS:
There is only one setup throughout the whole video, it is just one long take! done very cleverly and i think is entertaining even though it is one big take.

      LOCATION/S + MISE-EN-SCENE:
there is only one location in this video, however a few props are used. For example the cockroach, a live animal in a music video isn't used very often as they are very unpredictable especially bugs. Another part of the mise en scene used were the stool and rope to represent the artist committing suicide.

        DIRECTOR STYLE:
The director style is very much unique, Wolf Haley does most of the video for odd future. they are all the same in one way, all completely individual.

Like in this video, in the music video 'she' Wolf Haley goes with the demonic film as again he acts very creepy and has black contact lenses to represent a demonic creature. All of wolf Haleys videos like the songs are completely different each time they make them

          analysis of 5 videos

Mumford & Sons - Hopeless Wanderer

          • Narrative enigma is used to hide the faces of the 'band members' as they are not the actual band members but comedy actors acting as each member

          • A close up of each instrument is used to show each band member playing notes, to give the video a sense of realism, this is obviously only shown usually with artists in a band.

          • medium close ups/close ups are used to show emotion into the song and also give a sense or realism that the artists are actually singing it.

Icona Pop - I Love It

          • In the video when the lyrics are being sung they come up on the screen along with the two artists lip synching, lyrics on screen by themselves is common so is a close up of them lip synching however doing those things together is less common.

          • like most dance songs this song has a party within the video. This party that appears to be in a nightclub comes on when the song drops, into a more up tempo beat.

          • in alot of the song it is edited strongly and effects like this one, where to shots in one frame is used. this is very effective as it makes the video more interesting and stands out techincally

Lana Del Ray - Summertime Sadness

          • In this video they use an aged effect by distorting the screen with little white and black dots to give it an old cinema feel. this works effectively as the video looks like its from the past.

          • A smoke effect is used of Lana's face throughout the video to emphasize the 'sadness' and make the video more dark and gloomy.

          • When lip synching in the video, Lana uses this effect of her in the shadows. It is a close up and even though you cannot see her face fully you can still feel all the emotion from it.

The Verve - Bitter Sweet Symphony

          • This video is set in a very urban area as it goes with the videos point they are trying to put across about the world being gloomy etc. this is emphasized by the litter on the floor and the very urban area.

          • The video itself is one very long take however this long take is interrupted by moments of close ups of him miming the song, this is a common occurrence in alot of videos , using close ups to show the artist lip synching.

          • This video is so simple yet so effective, the video was a huge hit and this song is famous for its video. There a range of three shots. one from behind one from the front and a close up!

Swedish House Mafia - Miami 2 Ibiza ft. Tinie Tempah

          • At the start of the video are many titles which are very unique and artistic. It is almost like a movie as it says presents... This happens in alot of current music videos.

          • Tinie tempah comes on in the video in a white background, dancing and miming to the song. This is as the artist is rapping and like many other rap videos the artist is showed solo.

          • In this short take it shows a woman getting out of a bed, the effect of a cctv camera is used effectively to illustrate that no ones filming and it is real.
