LABEL: Virgin
GENRE: House
Relationship between visuals and lyrics:
there is a relationship between the visuals and lyrics when diagetic audio is used in a conversation between the two characters as the two break up. The girl then gets out of the car and lip synchs the lyrics: "what are we supposed to do, after all that we've been through, when everything that felt so right is wrong, now that the love is gone" this tells the story between the two characters shown at the start and what they are going through.
The chorus lyrics are also matched by people doing things in the song. for example when the waitress throws the cake in her bosses face, that goes with the lyrics 'the love is gone'

Genre Characteristics:
like this song and lots of other house/dance songs there is one main character who dances and tells a story about her life, this happens in many songs but another two examples are:Stromae-Alors on danse
Avicii-Levels
Intertextuality:As far as intertextuality goes between music videos goes there isn't really any. However where the film is set is very traditionally american with the american style diner cafe, which is used in many films and is stereo typically very american. Not just the cafe was stereotypical of america but the coffe jugs that are used and the american police in the diner.
Linear Narrative:
in this sequence there is a clear narrative that tells the story the whole way through, it is very random as the dancing and shot variety go however, it tells the story of how the girl in the video and her now ex boyfriend now have no love between them. Therefore the 'love is gone'.
the beginning and the end mainly tell the narrative because of the non-diagetic sound that is used and the story can be told much more easily. These short clips at the beginning and the start mainly tell the story as the woman think the love hasn't gone when her boyfriend is holding flowers, however for the comedy value a woman runs past her and hugs the man.

Representations:
one of the main representations in this video is gender. The video has used gender to its advantage by using a very good looking girl as the main character, which applies to the male gaze theory. if it was a good looking boy it wouldnt have the same effect as men wouldn't watch it. However women don't mind as much as men in general if the main characters a good looking girl.
It is a clever marketing strategy used by the creator of this video to draw people into the video then to presumably like the song and buy it!

There was a large variety of set ups in this music video as the location and the people in it varied so much here are just afew:No. of setups
In the desert |
Macklemore on the boat set up |
Snowy area where the video starts |
Locations and Mise En Scene:
there are 2 main locations, that are both basically at the same place:
There is the car park in which the couple have there arguments and where the songs begin.
Then there is the cafe diner in which the whole dancing routine and most of the song happens, in the kitchen and the sitting area
